Self-Drive Trail - The Great Outdoors

Slow down, breathe deeply, & reconnect with nature in the great outdoors. This self‑drive trail through Marradong Country & its surrounds invites travellers into world‑class native flora & fauna reserves, scenic walking trails, & peaceful camping & caravan locations. Designed for those who love fresh air & immersive outdoor experiences, this self-drive trail delivers a four-day journey of adventure at a relaxed & rewarding pace.

Day One

Depart Perth heading south toward the Mount Cooke Walk Trail, one of the region’s most rewarding hikes. Allow at least four hours to complete the trail, which leads to the highest point in the Darling Range, rising 582 metres above sea level.

After a morning on the trail, make your way to the newly renovated Wandering Tavern for a well‑earned lunch. From here, settle in for the night at the Wandering Caravan Park, set among beautiful grounds & equipped with a well‑contained camp kitchen, lounge facilities & a Heritage Nature Trail.

Evenings are best spent embracing the outdoors. During winter months, enjoy roasting marshmallows, or prepare dinner the traditional way using a camp oven under the stars.

Day Two

Immerse yourself in nature, beginning with the Dryandra Woodlands Conservation Area, one of Western Australia’s most important wildlife refuges. Choose from several campsites or book a cabin at the Dryandra Woodlands Lions Village for a more comfortable stay.

Spend the day exploring the walking trails woven throughout the woodlands. Stop at Pumphrey’s Bridge for a picnic or a striking photo opportunity among towering trees & tranquil surroundings.

As night falls, an unmissable highlight awaits. Book the Nocturnal Tour at Barna Mia Animal Sanctuary, where endangered native animals can be observed in a protected environment after dark — an unforgettable experience for nature lovers of all ages.

Day 3

Day Three

Leaving Dryandra, travel to the Williams Nature Reserve to explore native flora & fauna & take in panoramic views across the surrounding farmland. In nearby Williams, families can enjoy the Lions Park nature playground & picnic area, or walk along the riverside on the Williams River Walk Trail.

A range of cafés & roadhouses in town provide the perfect opportunity to refuel before continuing the journey.

In the afternoon, head toward Quindanning, where a warm welcome awaits at the historic Quindanning Hotel. Enjoy a chef‑prepared dinner & unwind in the beer garden or beside one of the many open fireplaces during cooler months. Stay on site at the Quindanning Hotel, or head 5km down the road to Springhills Farmstay for an authentic countryside experience that has been a favourite for more than 20 years.

Seeking an extra challenge? Travel approximately 30 kilometres along the Harvey–Quindanning Road to view the remains of the historic Long Gully Bridge, lost during the 2015 Boddington bushfires, & the newer suspension bridge leading into Lane Poole Reserve, part of the Bibbulmun Track. Access requires either a 12‑kilometre walk or a 12‑kilometre drive via unmarked 4WD tracks. This area is remote, with limited mobile reception, & conditions are suited to experienced travellers only. Careful planning is essential.

Day Four

The final day begins along the banks of the Hotham River, followed by time at the award‑winning Hotham Park. A park designed for all ages, featuring nature play areas, a skate park, fitness facilities, cafés, BBQs & picnic spots.

After lunch at one of the local cafés, enjoy a walk along the Ranford Pool River Trail. With fresh air in the lungs & plenty of memories collected along the way, the day concludes with a relaxed drive back to Perth in the late afternoon.
