The Popanyinning Heritage Trail offers a self-guided walk, bringing the rich history of this Wheatbelt town to life. Located in the Shire of Cuballing, the trail explores Popanyinning’s origins and development as an important settlement along the Great Southern Railway.
The walk features 19 clearly marked historical sites spread throughout the townsite, each sharing stories from Popanyinning’s early days. Established as a railway siding in 1898 and officially gazetted in 1904, the town grew around the railway, which shaped daily life and the local economy for generations.
Points of interest along the trail include the site of the former Popanyinning Hotel, which was destroyed by fire in 1978, the railway station precinct, and the historic town hall. Together, these locations paint a vivid picture of life in a small rural railway town and offer insight into the resilience and community spirit of the area.
The Heritage Trail pairs well with other nearby attractions such as the Popanyinning Nature Trail and Yornaning Dam. Yornaning Dam is located just 11 kilometres away with picnic areas, swimming, and a scenic nature walk.
